Pet turf works great for dogs if you install three things: 60+ oz face weight, perforated backing for drainage, and antimicrobial infill (Zeofill or Envirofill). Standard residential turf will not hold up to a real dog.
Why Pet Turf Is a Different Product
"Artificial grass" and "pet turf" are not interchangeable. The construction differences are significant:
- Heavier face weight (60–75 oz) so the fibers spring back from digging and rough play.
- 100% permeable backing (vs. partial perforation) so urine drains straight through to the base.
- Antimicrobial coating on the fibers themselves, not just the infill, so bacteria can't colonize.
- Tighter fiber stitch density so paws don't pull strands loose.
Installing standard residential turf for a dog-active yard is the #1 reason we get warranty calls in the second year. Don't skip the pet-grade upgrade.
The Odor Question (Honestly)
Done right, pet turf has less odor than natural grass — because urine drains through instantly instead of soaking into soil that holds the smell. Done wrong, it becomes a permanent kennel smell that you can't fix without ripping it up.
The fix is the antimicrobial infill. Zeofill (volcanic zeolite, naturally porous) and Envirofill (coated rounded sand with Microban) actively neutralize ammonia from dog urine. Standard silica sand or crumb rubber does the opposite — they hold odor.
Will It Survive Your Dog?
Pet turf with proper specs handles: 90 lb Labs and Shepherds, high-energy puppies, multi-dog households, daily digging at boundaries. It does not handle: bored dogs who chew the turf (no surface does), giant breeds without rotating play areas, or installs where the base wasn't compacted properly (the dog will create depressions).
Day-to-Day Cleaning Routine
- Solid waste: pick up like normal. The turf surface doesn't trap it.
- Urine: rinse with hose 1–2x per week (more in summer). Antimicrobial infill does the bacterial work; the rinse moves residue down through the base.
- Monthly deeper clean: diluted enzyme cleaner (Simple Solution, Anti-Icky-Poo) on high-use spots. Don't use bleach — it degrades the fibers.
- Annual: power-brush to lift fibers and redistribute infill. We offer this service or you can rent a power broom.
Safety Concerns Worth Knowing
Modern pet-grade turf is lead-free and non-toxic by certification — that's table stakes. The legitimate concerns:
- Surface heat in summer. Same as regular turf — cool-tech infill required for AZ. Check paw temperature before extended play.
- Infill ingestion. Crumb rubber infill can be eaten by puppies (rare but possible). Use Zeofill or Envirofill, which are food-safe.
- Allergens. No grass allergens. No grass pollen. Most pet owners with allergies notice an immediate improvement.
What Pet-Grade Costs Over Standard
Pet-grade turf adds roughly $1–$3 per sq ft over standard residential turf. For a 500 sq ft pet zone, that's $500–$1,500. Compared to the cost of ripping out the wrong turf in 18 months, it's the easiest decision in the project.
